You might wonder why exactly this animation. Today's nice technologies make it easier to explain to your kid and student how things - such as this Otto Motor, a core part of our society - works. Use a graphics drawing program to build the elements and compose the states, use a graphics (web) animation program to assemble the movie frames, and, finally use a web browser to look at the result (larger, slower version, 160KB). The coloring of the volume is green for the intake stroke, blue for the compression, orange/red for the power, and yellow for the exhaust. The first version of the animation was inspired by the nice description and static pictures found at the SIUC Automotive Students and ATO Club members site (SIUC: Southern Illinois University, Carbondale).
